Before smartphones there were flip-phones, and before the iPhone, there was the Razr. The slim and fashionable cellular device came in bold colors and introduced many first time cell phone users to SMS messaging. The Razr was released in 2004 and by 2006 when Facebook was still a college website and Boys Like Girls were just releasing their first single, the Razr had become the most popular mobile phone on the planet.
Now, according to the new Motorola commercial, in a period that seems more nostalgic than ever, the classic Razr may be making a comeback as soon as next month.
In the 45 second commercial set to the Boys Like Girls throwback single “The Great Escape”, students take selfies and talk on their Razr phones while walking through a high school hallway. At the end of the ad, the Motorola logo appears above the date 06.09.16. A voiceover says the familiar words “Hello Moto” as the commercial draws to a close.
Could a modernized flip-phone that makes us yearn for our high school days be exactly what we need? We’ll find out when Motorola releases new information on June 9th.
Until then, if you’re curious about the future of the Razr, you can join this mailing list, and if you’re a fan of the first Boys Like Girls album, you can see the band on their 10 year anniversary tour for their self-titled debut this summer.
