Brand New breakup rumors have been on the horizon since October of 2015 when frontman Jesse Lacey told their crowd that “this isn’t going to last much longer” in an emotional and heartfelt speech on his last tour stop in Nashville. Since then, Jesse Lacey has welcomed a new daughter named Bowie, Brand New and Modest Mouse have announced a co-headlining summer tour, new songs were released, and just two weeks ago, Brand New confirmed a date at Chicago’s Riot Fest.
Things seemed to calm down in the Brand New rumor mill in the midst of all of this great news, that is, until the enigmatic Long Island band made a huge announcement… on a T-shirt.
The “Flower Cross Black T-Shirt” was released earlier today and has pink roses in the shape of an upside down cross at its center, and the words “Brand New 2000-2018” written in pale pink letters across it.
This shirt is the biggest indication regarding the band’s future that Brand New has given us, dare we say, ever. It is also just another example of how Brand New always chooses to do things their own way. As Thrice guitarist, Teppei Teranishi, put it, “They’re an enigma. I feel like they’ve done everything wrong—they don’t do interviews and they don’t give a crap about anything—but somehow they’ve been so successful. I think it’s rad.”
While it breaks our hearts to know that the storm really is coming, it’s good to know that after all these years, the band isn’t completely leaving us in the dark.
Later this year, Brand New is expected to release a new album, the band’s first since 2009’s Daisy.
UPDATE: Jesse Lacey responds: “We’re not breaking up. We’re just not going to play for anyone else anymore, we’re just going to play for ourselves. Thanks very much for being here.”
