When”Bored to Death”, Blink 182’s lead single off California became the iconic pop-punk band’s first number one song in 12 years, we knew that the new album wasn’t going to be a repeat of 2011’s Neighborhoods. Produced by John Feldmann (Panic! at the Disco, All Time Low, Sleeping with Sirens) and released through BMG, California delivers the youthful, sunny, and carefree feelings that many of us associate with both Blink 182 and The Golden State.
The eponymous “California” shows the band’s love for their stomping grounds with the lyrics “Hey, here’s to you California/ Beautiful haze of suburbia /Living in the perfect weather /Spending time inside together/ Hey, here’s to you California.” After the second chorus, the band hilariously erupts into the familiar “Na, na na, na na, na na, na na’s” that are too reminiscent of “All The Small Things” for any longtime Blink fan not to take notice.
With the departure of Tom DeLonge and addition of Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba, it feels like Blink 182 is finally out of the rabbit hole and once again releasing the kinds of playful and uninhibited pop-punk songs that first won us over back when we were angsty kids without a care in the world.
