It appears that the popular music streaming platform Rhapsody is changing its name to Napster, the original file-sharing program that impacted the way millions of people all across the world access music.
Napster was created in 1999 in a Boston dorm room. Two years later, despite its massive success, Napster was shut down by the record industry. In 2011, Rhapsody bought Napster (or at least what’s left of it) and operated under its name in countries outside of the United States. In an effort to fully complete its rebranding, Rhapsody will soon become Napster to subscribers everywhere, in and outside America.
So what can we expect from the new Napster? According to a post on CNN Money, there will be “No changes to your playlists, favorites, albums, and artists. Same music. Same service. Same price. 100% the music you love.”
Napster shut down in 2001 and filed for bankruptcy in 2002. Since then it tried to remake itself as a subscription music service. It was bought by a series of companies since then, including German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, electronics retailer Best Buy, and most recently Rhapsody, which bought Napster from Best Buy four years ago.
Rhapsody was one of the first subscription music streaming services, starting in 2001 under the name Listen.com. Today it says it has 3.5 million global subscribers in 34 countries. But it has struggled to compete with Spotify and Pandora. And it faces increased competition from newstreaming services from Apple ( , Tech30), Amazon ( , Tech30) and Google ( ).
