Few bands have gained momentum like Albany’s favorite sons, State Champs. A stellar major-label debut album The Finer Things and numerous tours supporting artists like All Time Low, Silverstein, Motion City Soundtrack, and 5 Seconds of Summer, have thrust the quintet directly into the spotlight.
State Champs has proved to be one of the foremost bands at the head of the pop-punk renaissance of recent years. The band’s new found success saw them working a heavy touring schedule and playing concerts all over the world. These experiences certainly informed the subject matter of their latest record Around the World and Back. While the album is not a huge departure from the band’s trademark melodic-yet-aggressive sound, the album does present a healthy musical evolution, proving that State Champs has matured over the past few years.
One of the main lyrical themes of this record seems to be the disconnection that occurs when someone spends most of their time away from someone or something, topics with which the band is undoubtedly all too familiar.
The record begins right where The Finer Things left off with the aggressive “Eyes Closed” and blisters through the rest of the A-Side with primarily fast-paced, poppy anthems. Perhaps the most poignant song on the record is the pensive title track “Around the World and Back” featuring guest vocals from Ansley Newman of Jule Vera. State Champs lays it all out on the table on this acoustic ballad with the lyrics: “Sometimes I can’t help but say I’m falling in love and it’s scaring me/It came to me in a dream, now all that’s left is our empathy/But this is just the life I ordered, one step back and two steps forward/Sometimes I can’t help but say, we’re making history.”
Although there isn’t necessarily any new sonic ground being broken with Around The World and Back, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With a propulsive sound full of dual guitars and quotable lyrics, there’s no telling how much State Champs’ music will evolve at such a charged moment in their history.
